Placing the mass high (such as coexistent with the shift knob) would increase the momentum of the shift assuming the same shift lever velocity and likely increase the energy feed back making increased mass absorption needed to make your shift feel better despite it probably being worse. The material the mass is made of would affect the amount absorbed. Mass added to the shaft absorbs vibration feedback and that is independent of where located on the shaft. Each donut adds 140 gm of weight, making the Runabout 510 gm! However, since the weight would sit down on the shaft, the effect on feel might be more like half that due to shorter moment arm. Mark suggested golf club practice weights to increase it. Can anyone comment?Įven though they say "weighted" and it is heavier at 370 mg than the OEM, it is not as heavy as my Raceseng Topology. One concern is how it might install and mount. Something about the leather and shape still interests me. The Runabout is back in stock, tempting me again. Yikes did it feel terrible! The other thing that was shocking was how loud and terrible the exhaust sounded coming up through the shifter opening. I think there is likely a limit on the upper end with weight, but i am not going to try and find it.īy the way, after changing out the rubber boots on one of my NAs, it tried driving it with no knob on the shifter. I might note that I recently put a heavier Raceseng knob on the BRG and the shifting further improved in feel. I tested it with the knob from my '96 first to confirm the change, then went looking to buy one. I put a stock black knob on as soon as I could (found a seller on ebay) and then it felt like my '96 and the way it should feel. when I bought my '91 BRG, the previous owner still had the super-lightweight Nardi wood knob "upgrade" for the SE model, and I was really concerned about how terrible the shifting felt, almost wondering if something was wrong with the car, but it only had 27k on the clock. I have a heavier Raceseng knob on my OEM shifter and it definitely feels better.Īs an extreme example of Mazda getting it wrong. I would not say that the OEM knob is "perfectly matched" to the shifter. Though, this is always down to personal preference in the end. Would probably work really well with Cravenspeed's short shift kit as that reduced the throw another 5% over the JBR and would have struck a closer balance.ĬorkSport short shift kit seems to work well with ~415g of knob weight at a 15% throw reduction. I found that 500g knob first and said, close enough, lets try it. But finding specific weights can be challenging. In hindsight, something closer to 475g-485g would have been perfect with this shifter kit. It ends becomes boring/less engaging would be the easiest way for me to describe it.īased on some napkin math, which itself was based off of other peoples feedback, my math told me to aim for somewhere around 475-500g weight for the knob as a starting point. You lose some of the vibrations, lively feeling from the shifter when it gets heavier. The drawback of a heavier knob for me at least wasn't moving the weight around, thats quite easy. Rowing the gears requires significantly less effort than with the stock knob. I personally felt it was too much effort with the stock knob on the JBR short shifter which is why I got a knob that weights 1.1lb instead of 0.7lb. Generally, you can apply more force with your hand or get a heavier knob to offset it. If you reduce the throw while using the stock knob, you may find it too notchy or require more effort than you expected and need something for that extra momentum. If you are still on the OEM shifter, that Raceseng knob that looks similar would feel much better than the Billetworkz on that shifter, due to the weights being the same as OEM. The stock shifter with the stock knob are weighted perfectly to compliment each other. Your moving the fulcrum up towards the point of leverage (knob/hand) with most short shifters. It's all about getting the right balance. Wish the lunch was free with short shifters, but adjusting one thing, generally means you probably need to adjust something else. That Raceseng knob it the link above weights about the same at 0.7lb which translates to ~311g. I wasn't specific enough about what I was referring to, sorry about that.Ĭompared to the stock knob or that specific Raceseng, the Billetworkz knob is 61% heavier. I was comparing the two knobs (Raceseng/Billetworkz) that look similar. Nah, spec wise, they are all listed correctly.
